Heart-Lung Transplant Surgery
Heart-lung transplant surgery replaces both organs in one operation. It’s a rare procedure due to a shortage of suitable donors in the U.S. In this surgery, your surgeon evaluates the donated organs before opening your chest and connecting you to a heart-lung machine, which circulates blood throughout the body. The failing heart and lungs are removed and replaced with the donated organs. Most patients spend several days in intensive care after this surgery and are able to return home after a few weeks in the hospital.
