Dr. Nirav Mehta speaks to U.S. News and World Report about Music and your Heart

Dr. Mehta spoke with U.S. News and World report about how music can improve you heart health.

Dr. Mehta says, "Music has been shown to decrease adrenaline and cortisol release, i.e. release of stress hormones.  The physiologic result is a decrease in heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate in the near term and a decrease in blood sugar and inflammation over the long term.  For patients with heart disease (e.g. a prior heart attack, arrhythmias, hypertension, or a history of congestive heart failure due to decreased heart muscle function) the effects of music therapy may be likened to those achieved by administration of certain medications used to treat or prevent cardiovascular events.  The positive effects of music therapy, therefore, lie in its ability of reducing the risk of recurrent cardiac events such as the risk for having another heart attack, hospitalization for acute heart failure or recurrent episodes of arrhythmia."

CCP Opens Vein Clinic in South Philadelphia, the 3rd for the practice

America’s largest independent cardiac care practice has expanded its vein clinic practice and opened a new facility in South Philadelphia at 1703. S Broad Street. The clinic offers radiofrequency ablation to o patients suffering from veinous insufficiency and other venous disorders. Radiofrequency ablation is a non-invasive treatment for venous insufficiency and varicose veins.  In the procedure, a thin catheter is inserted into the afflicted vein through the skin.  The catheter emits radio waves which heat the specific areas of the vein and cause it to close down, therein treating the venous insufficiency and/or varicose veins.

Dr. Daniel McCormick, DO, FACC, FSCAI, says of the new opening, “The new innovative vein laboratory at 1703 South Broad Street will allow access to comprehensive, diagnostic and therapeutic vein procedures for patients suffering one of the most common and disabling clinical disorders. This will represent a tremendous resource to patients with varicose veins, chronic leg swelling, and other disfiguring venous conditions.”

CCP Physician Dean Karalis, MD FACC, FNLA named President of the Northeast Lipid Association of the National Lipid Association

Dean G. Karalis, MD, FACC, FNLA, director of Preventive Cardiology, at PAH, and a clinical professor of Medicine at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, has been named the president of the Northeast Lipid Association of the National Lipid Association (NLA), and takes office in May 2016.

The NLA consists of a total of five regional chapters representing more than 3,500 members from the U.S. It is a multidisciplinary specialty society including physicians, allied health clinicians, researchers, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists and dietitians.

The NLA was formed in 2000 to promote the specialization of clinical lipidology, a fairly young yet rapidly growing integrative branch of medicine focusing on lipids (molecules of fats, oils, waxes, some vitamins, and hormones), their metabolism and associated disorders.

Associated disorders such as heart attack and stroke account for approximately one-third of all deaths in the U.S. “Lipid management, involving lifestyle, dietary and pharmacologic interventions, has shown to be a most effective way to treat cardiovascular disease. Yet the number of specialists with expertise in lipid management is lacking in proportion to the number of patients facing cardiovascular and metabolic disorders,” said Daniel J. McCormick, DO, FACC, FSCAI, a fellow CCP physician.

Please join CCP as we congratulate Dr. Karalis on this appointment!
