Lung Transplant Surgery
Lung transplant surgery is used to replace one or both damaged lungs with healthy donor lungs. In this procedure, your surgeon will make a cut in the chest either on the side of the lung that will be transplanted or across the chest if both lungs are being replaced. The damaged lung will be removed and replaced with the healthy donor lung. You may be put on a heart-lung bypass machine to keep blood circulating throughout your body during the surgery. Recovery times vary depending on a number of factors, but most patients spend several days in intensive care after the surgery and are able to return home after one or several weeks.
