Heart valve replacement surgery replaces a severely damaged heart valve or valves, typically the aortic or mitral valve. Valves can be replaced with either a mechanical valve (usually made from plastic, carbon or metal) or a biological valve (taken from animal tissue). Recovery times will vary, but most patients need about a week of recovery time in the hospital after surgery.
